Code of practice when preparing to and visiting stones / sites of interest

| Suggested "Stone Hunters" equipment | Private Property | Common Land | The Countryside Code |

Many sites are on private property or land.  Before visiting such sites you should:

  1. Find out whose land the site is on

  2. Contact the land owners to ask permission to access the site - you will find that many, if not all land owners are very obliging

  3. Leave your contact details

  4. Arrange a convenient time to visit, ask where can you park, if you can you take photographs etc

  5. Telephone the day before to see if the appointment it still convenient.

  6. Respect the land owners privacy when you visit

  7. Follow the code below

  8. Remember: Trespassing is illegal and will spoil it for those who genuinely wish to visit a site.  Land owners will, quite rightly so, become very annoyed at hoards of visitors and trespassers and may well take their permission for access away for everyone.

If the site is on common land:

  1. Take all your equipment with you

  2. Do not damage the area in any way, shape or form.

  3. Do not take anything away, except your memories and photographs (and your litter)

  4. Respect the land you are visiting.

  5. Respect the animals that live and graze on the land.

  6. Where possible, walk to the site and leave your vehicle where it is safe and out of the way - by walking, you reduce the risk of damage to the site you are visiting.

  7. Follow the countryside code

  8. Remember: Damaging or not respecting a site will spoil it for those who wish to visit after you.
