Amidst a marshy area a few hundred yards from the mountain road, high above Llangattock, stands this obscure monument. We say obscure due to its almost wafer like appearance. Although the monument can be seen from the road, it sometimes seems to blend in, almost chameleon like, to its environment.

This has been the case with a number of sites we have visited, and we like to think of it as part of the mystery of these mysterious monuments. Carreg Waun Llech is well worth a visit, it is simple to find, and easy to access.

The stone stands in its own little moat, which has always been full no matter what time of year we have visited.

We like this monument, and have visited on a number of occasions; also the panoramic views across the valleys are amazing.

Finding the stone is easy. From Crickhowell, turn down the hill by the garage, cross the River Bridge, turn left then first right, heading for Llangattock. As you climb the hill, look out for a right hand turn, signposted, Beaufort. This road will take you up the mountainside. Near the top you will cross a cattle grid and you will be able to see the other side of the valley. You may be able to notice, what appears to be a monument on the horizon, on the opposite side of the valley. This is a pile of stones apparently erected to commemorate the Queen’s most recent jubilee. After the cattle grid, continue along the road, you will need to take a right turn just before the main junction. Continue for a short while. Soon it will bear left down a short hill, as it straightens out the stone can be seen on your left, near the base of the bank.
