This is an impressive long barrow perched atop a hill, high above Llanhamlach just outside Brecon. You need to be on the A40 Brecon to Abergavenny road; soon after passing the Llanhamlach sign you need to take a left hand turn signposted Pennorth. Follow the road for a very short time until you pass a large farm on your right. The monument is directly opposite the farm, at the highest point you can see. Where the monument is situated is private land, therefore permission should be sought before entering the field. It’s a bit of a trek up to the monument, but nothing too strenuous. Tŷ Illtyd is quite a substantial barrow, with a mound of over 100 feet, approximately. It has a visible capstone of approximately 2 metres by 1.5 metres, supported by two uprights. The monument lies North / South, with the entrance facing North. Further stones to the north of the entrance suggest another capstone once existed. Atop the monument are various sinkholes where the earth has eroded, and fell into the chambers over time. The monument’s setting is quite overwhelming, with views of Pen-Y-fan, and surrounding valleys as far as the eye can see. This site is well worth keeping aside a sun drenched Sunday afternoon, to appreciate not only this mesmerising monument, but also the idyllic environment in which it resides.
