This stone is one of the few which has managed to elude us for quite some time. Following the directions of the map, we scoured every inch of every surrounding field with binoculars, to no avail. Every time we passed the area, we stopped and looked, usually ending in frustration. Then one dusky winters evening, just out of habit, we stopped the car, got the binoculars, and off again peering over hedges, when all of a sudden we spotted it nestled in a hedge. No wonder we couldn’t find it during the summer months, when the hedge is overgrown. So there it is! It’s so obvious now we know where it is, in fact its quite simple to find. From the A40, Brecon to Abergavenny road, take a left turn just before Crickhowell, onto the A479, heading for Tretower Court and Castle. You need to stay on this road, through Tretower. As you leave the village you pass the national speed limit sign, from this point count about six gates on your left hand side, parking at the sixth. The stone is situated not in the hedge running down the field, but in the hedge at the bottom. So you need to climb over the gate, walking down the right hand side of the hedge, you should, if you’re in the right field, come to a hole in the hedge where you can go through to the left hand side. Continue to the bottom, where there is a gap in the hedge separated by a fence, (hence the need to go through the hole). The stone can be seen as the bottom hedge begins to bear left. This monument is definitely worth a visit, although be prepared to have muddy shoes |
