Situated in the stunning landscape surrounded by panoramic views of awesome beauty. On this occasion we were also surrounded by cows, loads of them, thankfully none of them bothered us, although throughout the visit we were ready to make a dart for the fence at all times. Trellyffant is the remains of a chambered tomb. It has also been suggested that due to a small feature to the North of the main chamber, it may once have been a double chambered tomb. What makes this monument different to similar sites nearby is the fact that it has as many as 35 cupmarks on its capstone. Cup marks are an example of megalithic art forms found in Wales, although the authenticity of those found at Trellyffant have been apparently questioned. Some argue they are a natural occurrence, where some argue they are of Bronze Age origin. Finding the site is again relatively easy, with your trusty Landranger in hand. We visited on our way back to Newport from the Llech-y-Tribedd monument. From there it’s the next left turn, following the narrow lane for a short while until the road forks. Pull over onto the grass right on the bend. You must then get permission from the farmhouse to visit the site. The monument itself can be seen on the distant horizon through the fields, over the gate where we parked. On the day we visited, the owner of the farm was kind enough to explain to us from the gate which route to take to avoid getting zapped by the electrified fences which surround the field in which the monument is situated. Invaluable advice and gratefully received and appreciated. |
