The Rogiet stone stands proud against the destruction of its natural landscape by the construction of the new Severn Bridge and its trunk road, which passes directly adjacent to the ancient monument. The stone itself stands at approximately 6 feet and is very similar in shape to the Llangybi stone. It is suggested that the purpose of the stone would have been to act as a boundary marker during the Mesolithic and Bronze Ages, indicating continual use of the surrounding landscape in excess of 3000 years. It has also been suggested that the monument played a significant part in the ritual landscape of the area, which includes the Gray Hill complex. Whatever part it played in the ritual and social fabric of the ancient peoples of the surrounding land, one thing is for sure, and that is, like so many other similar monuments. They have stood the test of time and defy us, with all our modern technology to fully understand the mysteries of ancient times. Finding the stone - From junction 23 of the M4, take the B4245, toward Caldicot. Just before you go under the flyover for the new Severn Bridge, the stone can clearly be seen a few hundred yards into the field on your left, against the hedge. |
