Even though the remains of
this site are merely ruins, it is well worth a visit. Obviously not as
impressive as its namesake a few miles away, this site is still an enigmatic
place, but that was our personal feeling, of course you have to visit and
make your own mind up.
The mound on which the
chamber is situated is approximately 18 metres long by some 9 metres wide.
The chamber itself measures approximately 2 metres by 1 metre. The capstone
has long since gone, as is the capstone from a much smaller chamber, the
ruins of which are buried in the mound further down.
It is said that the site was
excavated in1921, where it is said the remains of 20 people were found.
Finding the site is
relatively easy. From the B4350, heading toward Hay-on-Wye from Brecon you
need to turn right just before entering Hay, following the sign for Capel Y
Ffin. You will pass a medical centre on your right, just up the road a short
way you need to take the first right turn onto a single-track road, which is
very narrow so beware. Follow this road as it rises and don’t turn off.
Before too long the road turns quite sharply left, as it does you should see
a footpath sign on your right.
We stopped here and parked
off the road as you are on the bend. The footpath sign points to a gate and
a stile, the monument can clearly bee seen from the stile a few yards inside
the field, on the public footpath.
