Meini Gwyr, is an embanked stone circle, around 4000 years old, 60 feet in diameter, and consisting of 17 stones, ranging in height from 3 to 6 feet, of which only two remain today.

The stone circle is the centrepiece, of the Meini Gwyr Complex, which consists of Burial Mounds, and Cairns of various forms.

As it is today, the site is rather unimpressive, with just the outline of the bank and the two remaining stones, but as the very informative entrance plaque suggests, entering the original site would have been a very different story. This ritualistic site was a very significant and important part of the area’s Neolithic and Bronze Age ritual and funerary monuments.

It is suggested that the name of the site, Meini, (Large Stone) and Gwyr, (Crooked) refers to the varying size, shape and angles of the stones, which were set in the circle. The stones however were not bluestones, which many associate with the area, but another form of volcanic rock, found locally, which were originally deposited by glacial action. The site is alternately called ‘Buarth Arthur’ (Arthur’s Yard).

Finding the monument is easy. Following the A478, through Efailwen, you come to Glandy Cross, take the left turn and carry on a few yards. The site is situated just passed the houses on your left, you can’t miss it, as there is a gate and a large information plaque, which you should take the time to read, as it is very informative.
