Gwern
Y Cleppa is the much disturbed remains of a chambered tomb. The monument can
be seen from the M4 motorway and is easily reached from a nearby business
park. Take
junction 28 off the M4. At the roundabout take the A48, signposted ‘Cleppa
Park Business Park’. At the next roundabout head up the hill to the top.
There is a car park on your left, running up the hill. Behind the car park
is a small fence, and tree line. Park your car in the car park. Climb over
the small fence and follow the path, which runs adjacent to the tree line.
This path will lead you to, and across the footbridge, which crosses the
motorway. Immediately
after crossing the bridge, turn left. You are now in a field which runs
parallel with the motorway. Directly in front of you, across the field, is a
tree line. Directly beyond the tree line, and perched on a rise, is the
Gwern Y Cleppa monument. The
monument is visible from where you entered the field. Although now much
disturbed, Gwern Y Cleppa still possesses a great deal of character. Its
capstone now lies amongst its recumbent uprights. But its dilapidated state
allows your imagination to picture it as it once was thousands of years ago,
before the motorways and factories, which now obscure its view of the
Bristol Channel to the South. It must have been a dominating feature,
perched high on open countryside. The first time we visited the site was a fine, crisp November afternoon. We found the site very comfortable. We have found this one the majority of the sites we have visited although this is not always the case. Consisting of about 9 stones, with the 'cap stone' probably the one that can just be seen under the tree. A bit of a sorry state - a better photograph will be available as soon as possible |
