The amount of times we passed this monument and never gave it a second thought. It was not until we purchased a Land Ranger map did we realise that what we were looking at was in fact the remains of a Neolithic chambered tomb. It is hard to imagine that what remains of the site today was part of an impressive cairn measuring approximately 45 metres long.

Low concrete posts now mark the outline of the site, although part of the original site is covered by the A40. This site is of great significance as excavations revealed evidence of a timber structure which pre dates the tomb, suggesting ceremonial activities took place here long before the tomb’s construction.

Excavations also revealed human remains along with animal bone fragments, other finds have included flint tools, pottery and weapons dating back to the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods.

The original tomb consisted of four individual chambers of which it is believed the local agricultural communities would have used each of the chambers for communal burials. The remains of the monument can plainly be seen adjacent to the A40, near Crickhowell.
