This site is definitely a case of the past meeting the present. The monument is actually situated within a children’s playground near a housing estate near Crickhowell.

The large earthen mound can be seen easily as it is next to the road. The entrance is visible, protruding from the earth in an Easterly direction. Four huge oak trees surround the monument unfortunately only one remains.

Within its current environment it may not seem particularly special, but if you stand back and let your imagination paint a picture of what it would have looked like, long before suburbia engulfed its magical ambience, when open fields encompassed the site.

In those days the monument probably would have had an unobscured view of the nearby river Usk, and would have probably looked quite majestic, perched high on a hillside, nestled between the four great oaks.

Reaching the site is simple. Travelling from Brecon, along the A40, turn right at the garage as you enter Crickhowell. This will then take you to the River Bridge, which you cross and turn left. You then turn right following the sign for Llangattock. A short way up the hill, take you’re first left, the playground is on your left, the monument can be seen by the remaining Oak tree.
