Gaerllwyd is the ruinous remains of a chambered tomb. The monument has been described as a Portal Dolmen, basically a central burial chamber, surrounded by upright stones supporting a single capstone, which more than likely would have been covered by a mound of stones or earth. What remains today is a large partly collapsed capstone supported by three of its original uprights. The construction of the B4235, which runs adjacent to the monument, could well have contributed to the disturbance of the structure, along with stone robbing, which would explain the destruction of the outer cairn. It has also been suggested that several stones from the monument have been incorporated into nearby buildings. The monument stands along a hedge of a field. Unfortunately we have yet to get permission to enter the field and approach the monument, and as there as always been livestock present in the field and no one available to get permission from to enter, we have had to make do with pictures from the opposite hedge. As you can see by the picture, the monument can clearly be seen from the field boundaries. Finding the site is quite straight forward. From the A472, at Usk, just before it merges with the A449, Newport to Monmouth road, you need to take a left turn onto the B4235, heading for Chepstow. This is a lovely drive through picturesque countryside as the road winds toward the small hamlet of Gaerllwyd. As you approach the crossroads at Gaerllwyd the monument can clearly be seen on your left, especially if the hedges have been cut. If not, turn a sharp left at the crossroads and it can be seen nestled against the hedge. |
