This monument is extremely easy to get to. You need to follow the signs to Dan Yr Ogof caves. Approaching from the Sennybridge direction. You need to be on the A4067, Ystradgynlais road. You pass by the Cray Reservoir on your right and keep on going. You are now looking for the first turning on your right. You can’t really miss it, although it does go back on itself, so take it slowly. It’s a narrow, twisty road, as they usually are to these monuments, so be careful. The road follows the river, which cascades down the mountain. As you come into open country, you can actually see the standing stone Maen Mawr from quite far away, as it is perched on top of an embankment on your left hand side. You will be able to judge where it is as it slips out of view, and park accordingly in one of the many parking spaces along the road. Then it’s simply a case of crossing the small river. There are a number of points to do so. This task is easy in the summer, whereas in wintertime it is a very different story. However, when you do cross, climb the banking to the monument. As you approach the, first thing you see is Maen Mawr. To the immediate south is the Cerrig Duon circle. The circle itself encompasses the rim of the embankment, on which it is perched. The circle consists of 20 visible stones, the tallest of which is approximately 2 feet. The panoramic view of the surrounding countryside is quite breathtaking, especially if you are visiting the site at sunset. We have visited Cerrig Duon many times. It is an exceptional monument, in the heart of the picturesque Welsh countryside. Adjacent to Maen Mawr Standing Stone.
