Was
it once a site of ritual sacrifice, religious gatherings and so forth?
Probably not. Probably just a romantic image bestowed upon this
lonely, yet charismatic stone. The Druids Altar, also known as The
Golden Grove is very easy to find, although we drove straight past it
the first time we went looking for it. Every
time since when we have visited the site we wonder how we missed it. Following
the A479 toward Abergavenny, from Crickhowell, go past the army camp on your
left. Keep going round the corner, and take the left turn, signposted
Llangenny. As you turn you will probably see a sign advertising the
Dragon’s Head pub. This is exactly where you are heading. The road is
relatively narrow and winding, so proceed cautiously, at a safe speed.
Follow the road until you get to Llangenny Bridge. A very narrow humped
bridge. As you cross the bridge, you are in front of the Dragon’s Head.
Turn left and park in the pub car park at the rear. The stone can clearly be seen, in the field across the road, near an out building. The stone can be reached by crossing a style, which is the start of a public footpath. The stone stands atop a barrow like mound, which itself is approximately 6 feet above the level ground. The base of the stone is surrounded by lots of smaller stones, approximately a metre in circumference. The stone stands on a perfect North/South alignment. Due to the frantic activity observed during pendulum dowsing, it could suggest that the stone stands on a leyline. The Druids Altar standing stone is well worth a visit. Its picturesque surroundings, are welcoming, and compel you to stay. |
