The third of the so-called “Dancing Stones”

It is not that simple to locate: from the road to Bosherton, head back to the B4319; at the junction don’t take the immediate right turn, join back with the main road which bears left, passed Samson Farm.

Follow it for a short while and as it turns sharp left, there is a junction to your right. Take this junction, which, if memory serves correct, is sign posted Stackpole. The road turns back on itself.

Follow the road for a short while, until you come to a bridge on your right. Turn and drive over the bridge, the road climbs up through the trees to what appears to be a large estate. Park the car and head down to the river.

Now simply follow the river path, the setting is absolutely idyllic. Follow the path for quite some considerable time until you come to the bridge. You need to cross the bridge, and you will start to climb. As you get to the top of the short bank, turn right, so you basically follow the bank of the river through the field. Across the other side of the field you are in you should see a wooded area, bordered by a stone wall.

Do not be deterred as the wall has stones jutting out of it at ‘regular’ intervals, almost like a staircase of stones, and the same down the other side.

They are quite clear and not a problem too find. The problem now however is finding your way to the other side of the wooded area.  Simply head as straight as possible through the woods, its not too far, although the closer you get to the other side the harder it seems to get through. Be prepared for picking thorns from yourself later. On the other side of the woods you enter a field.  There should be a section of trees in the middle of the field fenced off, head for this and turn left. You should be able to see the stone at the far top of the field.

Once again we have no measurements, but we believe it is over six feet tall. This site is well worth a visit, but remember to go on a bright, preferably sunny day, and give yourself a good hour or two to get there and get back.

There may be an easier way to get to the site, but this was the way we went, although the surroundings are absolutely amazing, it is hard and very thirsty work.

Legends / Stories

It is said that this is the Devil himself.  He was turned to stone following an evening of thievery.  The shape of the stone is dictated by the Devil's 'cloak' and his 'swag bag'.
